There are actually many people who are excited with the idea of owning a fox as a pet. Such animals are intelligent and charming and there’s just something special in having one that most people don’t. No doubt, foxes can make a decent pet for some who has resources and the time to take care of them but, there are many people who actually commit the mistake of buying pet fox, thinking that it would turn out to be like a dog.

Believe it or not, dogs and foxes have entirely different characteristics and traits and you should be well aware of these things.

Number 1. Foxes are harder to train – naturally, dogs are born with a strong pack mentality. Dog sees their owner as their alpha and is hardwired to obey their leader. When it comes to fox, they live to please themselves than their owner. Dogs want to make you happy and please you while foxes wants treat.

Foxes stink – whether you like it or not, foxes have a strong odor and while dogs can take several weeks without taking a bath to have a stinky odor, foxes may smell skunky most of the time. This musky and strong odor however can be lessened by neutering the fox but don’t expect to get rid of it entirely.

Number 3. Foxes are shy – there are a lot of people who actually think that foxes are an awesome pet and they can show it off to their neighbors and friends. The sad truth is, it almost always fall short of this. Foxes are so affectionate and attached with their families, but when there are strangers and visitors around, they are quite shy.

Number 4. Foxes have special needs – foxes require specific exercise and dietary requirements than a dog. They need lots of exercise per day and so energetic. Thus, if you want to own a fox, it will be idea to have a carefully designed outdoor enclosure.

Number 5. Foxes are great escape artists – when compared to dogs, foxes are way more intelligent on escaping from it. They can actually leap 6ft in the air, cling upside down to be able to climb along a chain link ceiling, climb up fences and so forth. Actually, any enclosure that’s designed to keep foxes should not just be big enough but must also have a full roof and impossible to dig out of.

It is true that foxes can make a wonderful pet but for this to happen, loads of research is needed about these animals to know how to take care of them.
