NAMPA, Idaho (CBS2) — Tons of clothing that could be repurposed instead ends up in the trash, literally. According to the EPA, more than 11 million tons of clothing and textiles went to landfills across the United States in 2018 alone. Plato’s Closet hopes to lessen the waste by providing an easy way for people to purchase and sell clothing.
“We take cash on the spot for clothing. So you come in, drop off your stuff, we check it in, then we’re going to go through your items. We’re going to pick out what we think is going to sell. Then you come back in and we offer you cash on the spot,” said Cassie Fehrer, owner of Plato’s Closet in Nampa. “So we’re putting money in people’s pockets, and we’re keeping clothes out of the landfill.”
Finding trendy clothing on a budget can be challenging, but luckily, Plato’s Closet has a wide variety of styles and sizes for both men and women.
“I find some of the cutest things thrifting that’s like, not made anymore or it’s just out of production,” said shopper Nekisa Addis. “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure and I’m all about it.”
Plato’s Closet in Nampa carries sizes ranging from XXS to XXXL at an affordable price.
“I feel like when I go shopping, I have to decide on maybe one or two shoes, and now I can get like, four or five because the price points are so amazing,” said shopper Helena Garrett. “Same with luxury clothing, like Athleta and Lulu Lemon. I feel like I can all get that stuff here too, maybe like 30% or even 40% off of what the retail prices are.”
Plato’s Closet in Nampa is owned by a local husband and wife team. They want people to know that all of their items are carefully selected and in great condition. While they cannot guarantee they will purchase your clothes, they can help you find other places to donate them.
“Any clothes that we don’t take, people can donate to us, and then we donate it to places like the Women’s and Children’s Center here, and then they distribute with the Boise Rescue Mission,” said Fehrer. “So the hope is most of them stay out of the landfill.”
Fehrer says she hopes you’ll come sell your clothes and shop at Plato’s Closet!
“We have cute, trendy clothes for affordable prices. Sometimes, when you’re a teen or 20-something, you can’t afford the clothes at the mall. They’re expensive, and here, you can get three times as much for the same amount of dollars,” said Fehrer.
Plato’s Closet is located at 2108 Caldwell Blvd Ste 117.
“We like to change our clothes so often,” said Addis. “And then when you’re over it, you come back and resell it.”
